Counselling and
Attachment-based
Psycotherapy

A gentle and inviting environment dedicated to understanding your personal narrative and building deeper connections.

I offer a compassionate, person-centred therapy style that is deeply rooted in attachment theory. By working from my own private practice, Kingsnorth Counselling, I provide a safe and quiet sanctuary for you to explore the present moment while acknowledging how your early life experiences impact your current emotional landscape. Together, we will create a secure foundation, allowing you to examine difficult parts of your journey with complete dignity and care.

Why Attachment?

The bonds we formed in our earliest years act as a guide for how we relate to the world today. By identifying if your style is secure, anxious, or avoidant, we can work together to transform outdated patterns. This deeper understanding helps you cultivate more meaningful, secure, and resilient connections with yourself and the people in your life.

Online Therapy

For those who cannot visit me in person, I provide secure online counselling across the UK. This digital option offers you the flexibility to attend sessions from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Using encrypted video platforms, we maintain a therapeutic space that is just as effective and confidential as an in-person meeting.

Taking the first step toward therapy often feels like a vulnerable decision. If you find yourself struggling with repetitive cycles that leave you feeling depleted, or if you simply need an objective person to help you navigate a specific struggle, counselling can provide a transformative path. I invite you to an initial consultation where we can discuss your goals and determine if my attachment-informed approach feels right for your needs.

Accredited

I am an experienced and BACP accredited psychotherapist (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists). While working from my own private practice, Kingsnorth Counselling, I bring years of expertise from clinical settings, education, and specialist supervision. My work is continuously informed by the latest research in attachment theory and my experience as a professional trainer. This ensures that every conversation we have is grounded in both professional clinical insight and genuine, heartfelt empathy.

Low mood and depression

As an experienced counsellor with an excellent reputation amongst peers, much of my caseload is made up of other counsellors and therapists.
Here's what they have to say:

"Working with Darren has been a genuinely transformative experience. His sessions are warm, open, and deeply holding, creating a space where I feel completely safe to express whatever I need to, without fear of judgement. He has a wonderful ability to sit alongside both the difficult and the joyful moments, allowing us to laugh and cry in the same session. That balance of compassion, authenticity, and humanity has helped me feel seen, understood, and supported in a way that has made a real difference to my life. I am incredibly grateful for the work we are doing together."

"Darren is an attachment specialist who doesn't just nod along. Instead, he provides deep insight and holds me to account. He challenges me directly, yet safely, and won't let me hide. If you want real growth rather than just comfort, this is the therapist to see."

"I came to see Darren during my counselling training. The journey between the person I was when I first came to see him and the person I have become has been one of tremendous growth. His empathic presence creates a space where you feel safe to open up. He shows up authentically, which allows room for you to be authentic as well.

"As a trainee, and now a qualified counsellor, he knew when to challenge me, and I have been able to reflect and see things from different perspectives,  something that has greatly helped me in my own practice. His specialism in attachment styles has been an invaluable support. He is committed to his clients' wellbeing at all times, and this has helped me grow enormously over the years we have worked together. What has also stayed with me is his willingness to acknowledge moments of difficulty in our work together. As humans we are complex, and it was through experiencing those moments of difficulty that trust in the relationship was truly fostered.

I feel truly lucky and forever grateful to have found the right therapist for me."

Areas I Can Help With

Childhood Trauma and Developmental Trauma

The impact of childhood experiences doesn't disappear simply because we become adults. Difficult early experiences can continue to influence how we feel about ourselves, regulate emotions, trust others and navigate relationships. Therapy provides a safe space to gently explore these experiences, helping you make sense of your story without becoming defined by it.

Emotional Regulation

Perhaps your emotions feel overwhelming, or maybe you struggle to access them at all. You may find yourself reacting in ways you don't understand, shutting down during conflict or feeling emotionally exhausted. Together, we'll develop a greater understanding of your emotional responses and create healthier ways of managing life's challenges.

Parenting and Family Relationships

Becoming a parent often shines a light on our own childhood experiences. You may find yourself wanting to parent differently while feeling unsure how to break familiar patterns. An attachment-informed approach can help you understand both your own emotional world and your child's, creating stronger, more secure relationships within your family.

Identity and Life Transitions

Life is full of change. Whether you're changing careers, becoming a parent, navigating retirement, experiencing separation or questioning who you are, periods of transition can leave us feeling uncertain. Counselling provides space to reflect, reconnect with yourself and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Feeling Stuck

Sometimes people come to therapy without knowing exactly what's wrong. They simply know they're surviving rather than living. If you feel disconnected, emotionally numb, overwhelmed or as though life has lost its direction, therapy can help you understand what's keeping you stuck and support you in creating meaningful, lasting change.

You Don't Need to Have a Label

You don't need a diagnosis, a crisis or the perfect explanation before coming to therapy. If you're struggling, feeling lost or simply curious about understanding yourself more deeply, that is enough. Together, we'll explore your experiences with warmth, honesty and compassion, helping you build healthier relationships—with yourself and with the people who matter most, because understanding your story is often the first step towards changing it.
